Next month Ministers from twenty of the world’s richest countries are meeting to discuss how to respond Covid.
While lockdown is easing in the UK, the virus could be taking hold in lower–income countries.
Right now, Latin America is the epicentre of the crisis, and there are reports that Covid is accelerating quickly in Africa. The health and economic crisis could push 500 million more people into poverty.
We need a plan that will help countries face and then recover from the crisis, and that means debt cancellation. Governments shouldn’t have to make a choice between saving lives and repaying debt.
Chenai Mukumba, a campaigner from Zambia told us:
“In Zambia, the government has to spend three times more on paying off external debt than on healthcare. Cancel the debt and allow countries like Zambia to prioritise health.”
Stand with Chenai and thousands around the world demanding debt cancellation. Write to your MP today.
